Teaching Emotional Intelligence for the Greater Good

Join us for a thoughtful conversation about how emotional intelligence can shape who we become, especially in turbulent times.

In this Community Meeting, we are joined by Aakash Chowkase, Ph.D., Associate Research Scientist at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, whose work focuses on how schools can foster emotional intelligence and character education at scale through rigorous, real-world research. Facilitated by Amy L. Eva, Ph.D., Associate Education Director at the Greater Good Science Center, this gathering invites us to explore how emotional intelligence can serve as a foundation for character, compassion, and resilience in schools and communities.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • What emotional intelligence really is and why it matters for students, educators, and families

  • How SEL fuels character development and helps students meet challenges with integrity and empathy

  • The role of character in addressing pressing global issues like climate change, racism, and polarization

  • Practical ways educators can weave SEL into daily teaching to nurture both academic and personal growth

In today’s climate, where uncertainty and division can easily overwhelm, SEL and character development remind us of the power educators hold in shaping not only minds but hearts. Made for educators, open to all— this session offers practical insights and skills that can be applied in classrooms, schools, and beyond. Come ready to reflect, connect, and leave with ideas and practices for helping students grow in the qualities that make the world better.

In Conversation: How to Disagree Agreeably

Based on the political causes they’ve championed as public intellectuals, one might expect philosopher Cornel West and legal scholar Robert George to bitterly dislike one another. But nothing could be further from the truth. The progressive West and conservative George are good friends, united by their interest in great thinkers from the past and by their commitment to lively, respectful debate on the questions that matter most.

For this In Conversation event, they will be joined by award-winning journalist Jane Ferguson, whose experiences as a decorated war correspondent in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan have made her keenly aware of how entrenched disagreement can lead to violence and unspeakable suffering.

Presented by the National Humanities Center in partnership with American Public Square and the National World War I Museum & Memorial.

Meeting Difficult Emotions with Self-compassion with Caroline Hoffman

Experiencing difficult emotions is one of life’s biggest challenges. We all have them, even though we often feel like we are alone when it happens.

In this session we will learn how mindfulness and self-compassion can support us in this territory so that we start to release the grip of emotions such as loneliness, fear, sadness, frustration and particularly shame, and change their impact on our lives.

The evening will include a talk on this subject, an opportunity to try out some short practices, and time for questions and discussion.  We will include the approaches of both tender and fierce self-compassion.
