In today’s polarized world, conversations about identity, politics, and values can stir up a lot of anxiety—especially in schools. But avoiding these discussions isn’t an option. So how can we engage with confidence, clarity, and care?
Join us for an engaging community meeting where we’ll explore the psychology behind our differences, why facts alone don’t change minds, and how to foster meaningful dialogue across lines of difference. We are thrilled to welcome special guest Dr. Mylien Duong, VP of Research at the Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI), a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to equipping the next generation of Americans with the mindset and skill set to engage in dialogue across differences. Dr. Duong will help us learn how to listen deeply, ask better questions, and engage with empathy—even in the toughest conversations.
This session builds on our past meetings, Teaching in Troubling Times (February) and From Challenge to Change (March), where we explored the emotional and cognitive demands of teaching in today’s world. In February, we learned from Parker J. Palmer how to keep connected to our sense of hope and integrity while teaching in complex, divided times. In March, we examined ‘ways of being’ that help us navigate conflict and change in our communities with guests from The Being Institute.
Now, we turn our attention to the conversations themselves—how do we talk to those who see the world differently? Why do people see the same facts and reach different conclusions? Why do facts alone rarely change minds? And how can we create space for real, values-based dialogue, even when we deeply disagree?
In this inspiring meeting, we will:
Discover the hidden forces shaping our sense of right and wrong
Understand how our values shape our reactions and differing worldviews
Practice skills for engaging in meaningful, constructive conversations
Learn techniques to foster curiosity, empathy, and understanding across divides—whether in staff meetings, parent conferences, or daily interactions with students
Made for educators, open to all—this session offers practical insights and skills that can be applied in classrooms, schools, and beyond. Come ready to reflect, learn, and practice new approaches in a supportive community!
