Living with Fire: Finding Calm in a Time of Uncertainty

At a time of distraction, division and even despair, we're all looking for whatever can give us a sense of unity and hope. Drawing on more than 100 silent retreats over 34 years, I hope to share a medicine that I have found useful in remaining centered and grounded in a world of mounting uncertainty. Mixing practical tips with inspiring stories, I'd like to pass along ways in which I have found hope in the face of impermanence.

Pico Iyer is the author of 17 works of fiction and non-fiction, translated into 23 languages, on subjects ranging from the Cuban Revolution to Islamic mysticism, globalism to silence and the Dalai Lama to Graham Greene. His recent best-sellers include The Open Road, The Art of Stillness, The Half Known Life and, this year’s Aflame. He has been a regular essayist for Time, The New York Times, The Financial Times and dozens of others since 1986, and his five talks for TED have received more than 11 million views so far.
